STRAWBERRY DREAMS: A LESSON IN REALITY'S FLAVOUR

Do you remember childhood tales peppered with boundless dreams? For me, the spotlight shone on the strawberry – the elusive gem of my youthful imagination.

You see, in the world I grew up in, strawberries weren't in fruit bowls; they were glamorous stars of juice packs and TV screens. To my young mind, they were the reigning monarchs of fruitland, despite having never tasted one. In my mind, the taste was conjured up from the strawberry-flavored drinks of my youth.

Einstein once quipped, "Imagination is the preview of life's coming attractions." When I landed in Canada, tasting a strawberry wasn’t just an item on my checklist. It was an earnest whisper from my past, a childhood dream eager to come to fruition.

Fate played its card at a party where the tables bore fruit galore but not a single strawberry on mine. My friend, however, had lucked out with a lone strawberry. Tossing etiquette aside, I couldn’t help but ask for it. The dream was about to come true, but the reality tasted different than imagined.

It reminds me of Oscar Wilde’s poignant words, “There are two tragedies in life: not getting what you want and getting it.” This strawberry saga of mine wasn’t just about fruit; it was a life lesson. The fervour for what we lack can overshadow appreciating what we have. It's like dreaming of strawberries when a banquet surrounds you.

Paulo Coelho said, “The secret of happiness is to see all the world's marvels and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon.” Life is a platter of experiences, each with its unique flavour. So, instead of hankering after that one dreamy taste, why not revel in the rich tapestry of what life actually offers?
